HVAC Maintenance Tips

It's that time of year again — spring cleaning is the topic on every homeowner's mind. Prepare your central air system for the hot summer days by tackling your HVAC maintenance checklist.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, it is time to schedule a spring check-up or inspection. Professional heating and cooling specialists can check your system for leaks and they will also give the system a good cleaning. Important working parts of the heating and air conditioning system will be cleaned and lubricated to ensure maximum efficiency all during the warm spring and summer months.

This preventive maintenance is necessary to keep the system working at its best and in some cases, to save your warranty. Certain HVAC systems actually require regularly scheduled maintenance annually to keep the warranty valid. If this maintenance schedule isn't kept up to date, your warranty may be voided.

HVAC Maintenance Checklist

Having an expert evaluate your units twice a year is considered best practice for prolonging the life of your HVAC systems, and it also helps to keep them clean and working effectively. Here is what you can do yourself to provide some HVAC maintenance.

Annual HVAC Maintenance

  • Check your outdoor AC Unit to ensure it is on a level surface.
  • Clean the AC condensate drain with a bleach & water mixture.
  • Replace your carbon monoxide detector battery to be safe.

Seasonal HVAC Maintenance

  • Replace your air filter (try to do this at least every 3 months for best effectiveness).
  • Ensure your heating and cooling units are clean, and free of leaves and debris.
  • During summer, turn off the water to the furnace humidifier.
  • During fall, replace the humidifier filter and then turn water back on.

There is still more that should be done to keep your systems running effectively. This is especially true in Minnesota, where we have harsh winters and hot, sticky summers that are hard on equipment. For AC maintenance and furnace maintenance in the west suburbs, contact Sebold Heating and Cooling today to inspect your systems and do repairs as needed.
